Jamestown Kitchen
Remodel
DESIGNERS:
SEBORN RAGSDALE & LISA PRINCIPE
Built in the 1800s, this home has been in the same family for generations and CKS was pleased to work with a family member on the kitchen remodel. The challenge was to create a space that was comfortable for a large family with small children while retaining historical elements that tied it to the rest of the home. The space was made more functional by first removing an adjoining wall to add space for two islands and a breakfast nook. Seating was incorporated in both islands, each at a different height, for both children and adults. Modern stainless appliances, multiple sinks and dishwashers offer the convenience of more than one preparation and clean-up area for large meals and entertaining. A custom hutch doubles (as a wet bar and the desk serves as a convenient place for cell phones, finding recipes or doing homework.
Aesthetically, the large space needed balance so cabinetry was brought to a height of 9.5 feet where a soffit was then added to create the boundary for large wooden beams and stained tongue and groove paneling. The use of white painted, inset cabinetry with period hardware, bead board, turnings and clover-leaf punched steel inserts evoke a period feel. For contrast the islands were finished in a silvery blue-green paint and a quarter-sawn oak desk and hutch were stained in a rich dark cocoa brown. Counter tops were created in 2.5 _ cherry plank, the island granite was stacked to create a 2.5 _ edge and a honed black granite was used to resemble soapstone. Finally, the existing wide-plank pine floors were updated with custom paint work in complimentary colors and allowed to scuff and wear slightly before being finished with the protective top coat.
