Lots of windows and ample storage don't often share center stage in a (well-designed kitchen. Add to that space for two cooks and professional appliances. Relishing the challenge, we made a major change to the architect's original plans by replacing two smaller islands with one expansive center island. This solution not only gave husband and wife cooks ample space to work in tandem, it also allowed for plentiful and varied storage which eliminated the need for several wall cabinets, making way for large windows and an arched pass-through to the adjoining family room. The large scale of the island now required balance and so the professional range was placed in a large, arched alcove mirroring the proportion. For finishes, we creatively mingle elegant turnings and rich stained cherry as a clever contrast to the rough-hewn ceiling beams. We chose a creamy paint on the few wall cabinets that remain to coordinate with the wall and trim colors, keeping the space from feeling top-heavy. This design solution proves that function and beauty can be achieved without sacrifice.
